Today we look at Matthew 6:19-24
19Now I feel I must point Jesus never condemned riches what he is warning about here is storing up riches just for the sake of having them because you will lose them at the end of your life but it is not wrong to store up food, or emergency provisions or even belongings after all before Jesus began his ministry he was a carpenter who built belongs. It also says in proverbs 6"Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
22"The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, 23 but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!
24"No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money
6 Go to the ant, O sluggard;
consider her ways, and be wise.
7 Without having any chief,
officer, or ruler,
8she prepares her bread in summer
and gathers her food in harvest.
so storing up food for a rainy day is not only good but also wise.
I think what Jesus is warning us is best expressed in verse 24 especially in the NIV that word money begins with a capital letter because in that culture money was an idol called Mammon. The question here do you own your money or does your money own you?
